January wood sale pictures and stuff.

Hello folks, hope you are having a slight bit better winter then we are. Lots of snow and bitter cold. Got ice all over the roads and driveway. Hate walking on that crap.

Anyway, got some pictures of some stuff and will send out the email to the folks that want it. if you want to be included on the wood emails I send, just let me know. Go to my web site,
www.bobkloes.com and click the email link. Send me a note saying you want to be put on the list for wood sales. That's all it takes.

Not much for pictures , but these are some of the piles of material I have.
These 2 pictures are some stuff I set aside for box guys. There is an assortment of spalted birch, spalted maple, "karolien" maple, which usually comes from Sibera of all places. Plus some odd stuff I am not sure what to call it. Some are wide, some run 4" to 6" wide.
Here again is a picture of the stack of box stuff. 90$ for a  20 ft bundles. Plus shipping.

This is a picture of a pile of 4/4 birdseye. All rough. Mostly white 1 side, some heart on the other. Runs 4" to 8" wide. 90$ for a 20 ft bundle. Plus shipping.

This is a stack of 12/ 4 curly maple that has some color. Not the highest figure, but its nice, has reddish heart on some sides. I used this for bed post material for the bed I made for my wife. She loved it. Not sure how much shipping is on tall bed post stock, but I can see. You should get 2.5" to 2.75" square stock out this this material. I do have some with bark on if you want some odd pieces. I normally sell bed post stock for 12$ ft. This is going to sell  for half that, 6$ board foot.

This is a pile of 8/4 birdseye. All nice figure, some heartwood on the back side on some of this. It cut thick. Most is 2.25" and thicker. Normally 10$ board foot. This month only, 8$ board foot. Its very heavy and has some twist in it, but for leg stock or small tops, its great.
This is 4/4 hard curly maple. For 4" to 8" wide stock its 5$ ft. For wide stock 9" to 13" wide, it 9$ board foot. This is the hardest stuff to find. Much harder then even birdseye. This stock was all sanded to 15/16". The picture doesn't show it, but it has really nice figure. The wide stuff is excellent for music instruments. Just very hard to find.
This is a pile of wide [9" and wider ] birdseye, 4/4 stock. It starts at 7$ board foot and goes up. Its usually white one side. Due to how far in the tree you have to get for wide stock, its almost impossible to have it white on both sides. Then again, for all the furniture I have made, I am not sure if I ever cared if it was white on 2 sides. This is the top of the line wide , good figured birdseye. One thing I have always seen in the birdseye, is it tends to fade out towards 1 end. It doesn't do that in curly.
This is a pile of 8/4 soft curly maple. I have square edged stock and natural edged stock. It runs 100$ plus shipping for 20 ft packs. Nice for lots of stuff. Great figure and usually has some color on the back side. The natural edged stuff make really nice table tops when you rip 1 edge and glue pieces together.

This is the 4/4 soft curly maple. 75$ for 20 board feet, plus shipping. Nice figure, easy to work .
See the newsletter for some other things for sale.

Springtime in Wisconsin

The picture above shows some mineral streak in the board on the left. The board on the right has bark inclusion in it. Mineral streak is what the tree gets out of the ground as it grows. Most hard maples have this in them. The figured ones seem worse then plain.
This plank is birdseye, 4" thick and very heavy. The plank below is 16/4 hard tiger maple. Very tight curl and will probably go for music instruments. The bird poop is free...
Piles of birdseye and hard curly maple

The last 2 months have been busy. Got almost 4000' of birdseye and hard tiger maple stacked and stickered . Thank God for my friends and son in law. They haul and help me stack and sticker. Some of these planks of green maple weigh several hundred pounds each. I move each of these pieces 4 times by hand by myself and with help. You wonder why good wood costs money? Lots of dollars tied up for a long time drying. Gas and truck expenses and dry kiln expenses. Plus handling. Sure makes the price more reasonable when you think about it. It takes lots of care to make sure it dries right, without honey comb or checking. Can't do much about twist and warp, but we try.  This will stay like this for several months. Then slowly it gets kiln dried. The 4/4 stock[1"] takes the shortest. The 16/4[yes 4" thick birdseye and tiger maple] can take a year or more. Can't rush it. Its like wine. It has to be done correct or you get firewood. I was so happy to get 12/4 birdseye, now I even have some 16/4. Not much at all but what I have is wonderful. A lot of this came off an island in Upper Michigan. Nice slow growth and wide. Seems to have a lot of 10" and wider stock. Had to be some huge trees.

The paint colors tell me what mills they come from. The end grain gets sealed at the kiln. I know folks say you can use latex paint or oil paint to seal end grain. Talk to any mill or kiln, they only use anchor seal. Its wax based and seals perfect. Best stuff out there. I will not cut corners drying wood. It is like building furniture. Do the best you can with the best material and you have no regrets.

Cutting season has begun.

This is the second load of the fall. About 500 ft. Got a load 2 weeks ago that was about twice this size. Lots of 8/4 birdseye and flame birch. A little 6/4 and lots of 4/4. Some nice wide stuff too. I even saw some spalted in there. My son in law dropped this off last night about 8 pm. It will get stacked and stickered this morning. Lots of frost as you can see. It is 25 as I write this. This is the time they start cutting lots of maple and birch at the mills. No staining when it is cold like this. This will now air dry for at least a month or more. Probably more. I have several thousand feet waiting to go into the kiln.  I did get the quarter sawn curly maple out of the kiln. I will be sending those pictures out in my wood letter to my customers. I have only a little, but it turned out very nice. More is air drying as we speak. If you don't get my wood letter and want one, email me. Hope you are staying warm  and to all my east coast friends, God bless you. Hope you all get through the aftermath of the storm ok. I hear lots of stories about no help from fema and the other government groups. I hope that is not the case.

Spalted maple and some other goodies.

Got a new load of wood from the kiln today. I also had these boards heat treated. I don't think I want to build with wood that has a live fungus or bugs in it. So I have them cook these at 145 degrees for 48 hours to kill anything in them. This was some really nice spalted hard maple I got from a friend. Years ago we  sheeted his shop with this stuff. I t about cried. He kept saying it didn't make him sad. He had some left over and I finally talked him into selling it. It is 12 feet long and 4 to 7" wide. Nice clean stock.

I have been very busy in the shop. Did a small dining room table, some benches, a vanity in black ash and some smaller pieces. It has been a good week. Got some wood to ship out this coming week.Have to get some desks made and some more benches. I want to get one of the nice tiger maple slabs in and plane to get some pictures for a guy who wants a mantle. Got some wonderful nice slabs here, along with a bunch of new 8/4 stock. Had my buddy turn some legs in flame birch and birdseye. They came out wonderful. Email me if you are looking for leg stock or some great stock for small boxes.
